‘Call Me By Your Name’ author André Aciman has confirmed Elio’s dad is not gay. Even relatively positive films like Pride or Love, Simon includes scenes in which a parent struggles or refuses to understand who their child is. As he releases his Call Me By Your Name sequel Find Me, author Andre Aciman has clarified a long-standing fan theory about Elio's father Samuel.

When Call Me By Your Name came out inno one could quite agree about what was going on in Elio’s dad’s famous speech at the end. There's been some discussion on this site about this, and people have interpreted the father's comments in different ways, but I personally believe the father was referring to genuine love -- not necessarily a former gay interest.
There was a queer love story, of course. The affair is kept secret. Pride Cinema. For many queer people, this guidance is absent. But Elio, upon a listless return from one last trip, discovers that his father is aware that this is more than just friendship.
